Neil Nelson is a music educator and instructional technologist with over 13 years of teaching experience ranging from middle school to college undergraduates.
He currently serves as Director of Bands and Fine Arts department chair at South Aiken High School in the Aiken County Public School District, a position he has held since 2012. He also serves on the faculty of the Aiken County Virtual Academy within the school district, teaching online courses in Music Appreciation via the Moodle Learning Management System. He has served in a similar capacity as band director at South Rowan High School in China Grove, North Carolina and Walter M. Williams High School in Burlington, North Carolina.
He holds an Educational Specialist degree in Instructional Technology from Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. As a successful graduate of this program, he is poised to design, develop, implement, evaluate, and manage technology in instructional and educational settings to improve teaching and learning. He is a certified Apple Teacher and a Level 1 Google Certified Educator.
He earned the Master of Music degree in Music Education from Louisiana State University with an elective emphasis in music technology in 2011. During his time at LSU, he served as a graduate assistant to the music education department and taught undergraduate courses in instrumental techniques and supervised student teachers in addition to writing a Master’s thesis. He also pursued additional studies related to conducting under the guidance of Maestro Carlos Riazuelo. Undergraduate studies were completed at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina where he was an active member of the ASU Wind Ensemble and Marching Mountaineers. He is also the recipient of a prestigious North Carolina Teaching Fellowship.
As a clarinetist, he has performed with numerous university and community ensembles as a freelance musician, most recently with the Palmetto Concert Band, a nationally recognized ensemble of professional and semi-professional musicians in the Columbia, South Carolina area. He previously served as Director of Instrumental Ministries at Riverland Hills Baptist Church in Irmo, South Carolina where he conducted the church orchestra and administered the handbell ministry.
He is happily married to Genny Nelson, who is a middle school orchestra director in Lexington. They have four children and are the proud owner of three cats, a miniature dachshund, and a rescued racing greyhound (Fifi). They reside in Aiken.
